Illinois Leaders: Pay Our Bills!
In early January 2010, Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes announced that the state has over $5.1 billion in unpaid bills but no cash to pay them. As a result, service providers can't meet payroll, agencies are at risk of shutting down, and clients may lose services.
While the only long-term solution is a revenue increase, a borrowing plan may give providers short-term relief and keep their doors open.
Send a message to Governor Pat Quinn, Comptroller Dan Hynes, and Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias urging them to come to an agreement on a plan to keep providers from collapsing. If there is a borrowing plan, fair and transparent criteria must be in place for prioritizing payment to providers that are at greatest financial risk.
Be sure to give examples of services you rely on that are at risk, how much money your agency is owed, etc.
